A wonderfully inviting book about Einstein for youngest readers
When my wife and I saw this book available for review from VINE, we were happy to do so. We're both lifelong readers and now we're grandparents who enjoy picture books with our very youngest grandchild. This is part of the legacy of Frances Lincoln Children's Books, now owned by Quarto. My wife and I have collected many children's books since the 1970s, so we were immediately drawn to the name of Lincoln's world-famous imprint for children. She died way too young 20 years ago but her vision continues and you can read about the writer-artist team that produced these My First Artists books in the Amazon book page. We know and love and respect the work by this creative team stretching all the way back to the vision of Frances herself. In this book, Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara and Jean Claude have created a vivid life of Einstein for very young readers, meaning that these are ideal books to start reading to small children. Some books in this series are actual board books, which the littlest readers can safely handle. This book is not a board book. It has more pages, more words and we really appreciate that the publisher decided to put thick paper stock into the pages, which means that our 2 year old granddaughter can easily and safely turn these pages with us, or while she flips the pages herself. Then, I do want to point out that the publisher rates this book for ages 4 to 7 and that makes sense given the language and concepts in this mini-biography of Einstein. However, in our family, we're reading this book with our 2-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter already. The colorful illustrations are very engaging and we read and tell and talk about the story as we go.Now, we should explain: We also have an earlier Einstein board book and the idea of linking early childhood learning to Einstein has been popular for a very long time. We all hope to be raising little geniuses. So, it's not unusual to want to raise this name and story with very small children. However, this book does include the rise of the Nazis in Germany, the start of World War II, the connection between Einstein's thinking and the atomic bomb. So, those are some pretty deep subjects for very young children. At this point, as readers to our 2-year-old, we can shape the entire book to skip over more troubling subjects at the moment. For example, we're not even trying to explain the concept of the atomic bomb to our granddaughter. That's for a later age. She can't read yet, so we can shape the overall story at this age however we want. What we especially like in this book are the strongly articulated themes of creative imagination and the commitment to helping other people, which Einstein certainly embodied. We think think is a brilliantly conceived series of books and this is an especially good volume within that series.Very happy to give this 5 stars.
