These sponges start out as a pale beige, but they don't stay that way. They hang on to a LOT of fish mulm. You can easily fit two of them into a filter with a bit of room on top for a bag of chemical media.You'll want to rinse them out fairly frequently if you have a heavy bioload. If you use two, rinse one of them each week. They'll double as biofilters that way. Or if you have another biofilter, you can rinse both of them.Note: If your filter output starts to go down, that means these are getting clogged with crap. Time to take them out and rinse one.The AquaClear instructions tell you to replace the sponges once every three months. These sponges last a lot longer than that.

I do have 2 aquaclear 50's running in 2 of my tanks but I also have penguin 200's running in other tanks, along side sponge filters in all of my tanks. I use these sponges in ALL filters and sometime I cut them for use as pre-filters and slide them over intake tubes. They are great for holding beneficial bacteria in all cases while filtering out particles of debris and waste. This pack is affordable and great to have on hand for a variety of uses. I do even use them to clean fish tank glass as they aren't too rough.

These foam pads are the correct size. However they are much more dense. That means they trap much more debris. I cleaned my tank and put these new pads in. After 8 days they was already enough blockage that the pads were bending upwards. I am now 4 weeks in and they are still in there.Anyone who uses the out-dated AquaClear filters knows that you must keep something heavy on top of them. If I did not have a weight on top of mine, these pads would have blown the top off just a week after installation.

I've been using these filter pads for approx. 40 years. The name brand filter pads were changed a few years back. The previous ones lasted much longer. These are identical to the original pads. Much sturdier. I now have enough to last for a few more years. I hope they're still available when I need more.

I normally wash out my filters in tank water and replace to save the bioload but eventually they just get too bad to even filter well - so these filters will probably last me a lifetime at a very small cost. Very pleased with the value and quality, they are just like the original brand replacements as far as I can tell.

I may be overdooing it with these which is why I feel how I do. I use them in a tank with 3 grown aquatic turtles. The tank gets super dirty quick, making it hard to clean the filter inserts fully. I think they would work wonders for fish in a tank.

I love these foam pieces. Such a good value then buying a 3 pack for 10.00 at the local store. I will definitely purchase these instead
