Not what I was expecting
I thought this was a book of mystery puzzles for kids to solve. Most of the book is short stories about Samuel Sleuth, a middle school aged detective. It's written in a "Sam Spade-ish" voice of a bygone era, which I didn't think would connect particularly well with the child I purchased it for, as she has no context for it.I skipped to the end of the book to read the solve-it-yourself mysteries. The first one had a massive typo- referring to a suspect as Mr. Lee, then having a paragraph referring to this character using female pronouns, and then reverting to male pronouns a paragraph or two later. Furthermore, the explanation of "whodunit" was very straightforward. No clever twists or little details that needed to be attended to- just a kind of plodding explanation of who did it based on very obvious clues. The third "you solve it mystery" was also riddled with mistakes. Two of the three "suspects" show concern about the missing Guinea pig and one of the suspects is described as "cool and collected" and was also seen leaving the classroom during recess. In the reveal, these details are attributed to a different suspect entirely. Shoddy writing and poor editing in this section, and ultimately why I returned the book. I think all the high ratings must be from friends of the author.

My son's favourite book
My son hates World Book Day, but came out of school smiling, saying that he was reading this book independently and he loved it. He took a couple of accessories into school, a hat and a magnifying glass, and we had gone through the solve it yourself mysteries the night before, using various plushies as the suspects, and torn up paper with drawings on for the items found at the scene. Really nice to see the excitement in his face, as he was piecing the clues together.

It was OK
I can't agree with the logic behind the answers but it's a bit of fun.

Save your money
Short, insubstantial, incoherent solve it yourself mysteries. Just not worth the money.
