The trend today seems to be replacing metal earring backs with softer backs. These clear resin balls replace most silver or other metal backs that usually come with earrings. They are softer and don't poke the ear as a metal one might. To make them prettier, they have a design of electroplated silver or gold ferrule. One negative: The description lists these as being great "earring lifters," but the one heavier pair I tried them with did not get lifted.
