Yes it can scan larger objects, but it isn't easy.
While it might not exactly be false advertising that you can scan objects up to 500mm, they really ought to clarify that the scanner can only scan 200mm in height at one time. You can, of course, stitch together a bunch of 200mm scans at different angles to capture a larger object, but it's a bit painful. You could, in theory, scan something much larger than 500mm, if you had all day and a lot of patience. This scanner is optimized for toy-sized stuff, around 200mm that can fit on its turntable. If that's all you want to scan, this scanner does a great job and has decent resolution. While the software is a little annoying, I am generally impressed at it's ability to line up scans. Having spent some time with an $8000 3d scanner at work, I'd say that this package does a better job at recognizing and aligning scans. The big frustration for me is that I'm generally wanting to scan my figure sculptures, each of which are around 500 mm in height. I'd assumed (like the $8000 scanner) that I'd be able to move the scanner back from the object and scan a larger area. That was not the case. The Einscan SE can only scan objects that fall between 300 and 400mm from the scan head, and the scan region in that distance only extends 200mm in height. So in order to scan something larger, you've got to do a lot of manual repositioning of both camera and object. However, if you're patient, you can get a good scan. I'm also impressed by the meshing algorithm - it generally did a good job capturing detail and outputting a water tight mesh.Since the software comes with a calibration, you can in fact separate the turntable and cable from its stand, and position the turntable at any height you want. My biggest complaint about the software the fact you have to turn the little card 3 times, and then it takes 3 or 4 minutes to run the calculations after you're done scanning the card. But, it does allow you to scan a larger object with the turntable at different heights, which speeds up the scanning process. While I was seriously considering returning the scanner, after having successfully captured a couple of my larger sculpts I've decided to keep it. Their support team was helpful in getting me up and running, when at first I thought the whole product was useless (I was trying to scan outside that 300-400mm focal range). I also wish they included better information showing different methods for scanning larger objects in the very sparse (and poorly translated) 'quick start' guide. There are no online manuals with more info than the quick start guide, just a youtube video with just a tiny bit more information.
