Q: Do I use this as a normal barrel cap, then only use the gas if my beer turns out to be flat?

Hello Yes you would use the injection valve cap instead of the standard vent cap (the valve includes a vent). You would then prime your barrel with sugar (as per kit instructions) as per usual. You do not inject any co2 at this stage. You should dispense around half your barrel or more from the co2 pressure created during the priming stage, and once this has gone you inject a co2 bulb, this keeps your beer safe from oxygenation and allows you to keep drawing off the beer without any need for re-priming Regards Brad

Q: When screwing it into the barrel adaptor, how do you know when to stop applying CO2? Does it use one canister each shot?

HelloWhen adding co2 with an 8 gram bulb via the injection valve, it is a one shot deal, so you shoulod screw the bulb holder down until you hear it pierce and keep it screwed tight untiol the bulb empties itself (usually 4 or 5 seconds) and then remove.Regards BradBalliihoo Homebrew

Mine fits the standard two inch (5cm) barrel top. I presume you can return it if it doesn't fit yours. It does the job well.
